For archiving and long-term preservation they represent a major challenge which until now has only been met in a rudimentary fashion worldwide. Since 2008, Switzerland has had a modern Federal Geoinformation Act (GeoIG), which together with the Federal Act on Archiving (ArchA) forms the legal basis for the long-term availability, historicisation and archiving of geodata. The Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) and the Swiss Federal Archives (BAR) are working together on a solution for archiving geodata in order to implement these legal requirements. </p><p>The first basic principles and insights were published in the report of a preliminary study entitled Archiving Geodata.
