SWISSIMAGE FCIR

The false-colour infrared (FCIR) orthophoto mosaic of Switzerland is a 16-bit image product for specialist applications. It comprises a combination of near-infrared, red and green channels.

Production

Five channels (PAN, NIR, R, G, B) are recorded with ADS (airborne digital sensor) digital cameras. The four colour channels lie parallel to one another which permits the simultaneous handling of the normally elaborate procedure of correctly aligning of the four rows of sensors. Consequently, in addition to the production of SWISSIMAGE (a combination of red, green and blue channels), SWISSIMAGE FCIR can be produced for a small additional cost by means of the combination of near-infrared, red, and green channels.

Structure

  • Ground resolution: 25 cm in flat areas, 50 cm (resampled to 25 cm in mountainous areas, as with true-colour SWISSIMAGE)
  • Spectral resolution: NIR, R, G
  • Colour depth: 16 bit (12 bit sensor)
  • Format: TIFF
  • Perimeter: identical to SWISSIMAGE
  • Coordinate system: LV95

The display is built up in tiles, each tile representig 1/16th of a 1:25'000 national map sheet and thus covering an area of 4375 by 3000m.

SWISSIMAGE FCIR is available from the 2010 aerial survey onwards. An annual survey covers one third of Switzerland. A third of the country's territory is therfore produced every year.

Quality

Ground resolution and geometric accuracy are the same as with the true-colour infrared orthophoto mosaic of Switzerland, SWISSIMAGE.

In contrast to SWISSIMAGE (RGB), no manual corrections are carried out on the images' radiometry and geometry.

Applications

Because vegetation reflects light mainly in the infrared spectrum, the false-colour images are ideally suited for environmental analyses. For this reason, the SWISSIMAGE FCIR product is of great interest to environmental specialists but can also be of use in other fields, such as archeology.
