Cadastral Surveying: Direct Supervision

The operational management of cadastral surveying is in the responsibility of the cantons: they plan and manage the operations and define the specific standards for their own cantonal purposes. They verify and approve the cadastral surveying activities for the main reason that the act of approval gives those activities the official stamp; the documents are then considered as legal deeds in terms of the civil code.

Twenty cantons maintain their own agency for the management of cadastral surveying performing the above mentioned tasks.

The cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Glarus, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Uri, as well as the Principality of Liechtenstein, have delegated the operational management to the Federal Directorate for Cadastral Surveying. In these cases, the Federal Directorate takes over the task of operational management under the direction of a licensed surveyor.
