Deputy Director of the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo
Dr Fridolin Wicki will serve as Director of swisstopo as of 1 November 2014. From 1 June to 31 October 2014, he will be running the Office in his role as Deputy Director.
Fridolin Wicki was born in 1964. He lives with his partner and four children in Aarau.
Education and training
Fridolin Wicki went to school in Aarau and left secondary school with a type C (mathematics and natural sciences) Baccalaureate in 1983. He went on to study as a survey engineer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). After completing his studies in 1990, he became a licensed surveyor in 1992. In 1998, he graduated as Doctor of Technical Sciences with a thesis on robust estimation methods for assessing geodetic network parameters. In 2013, he completed a part-time postgraduate Executive Masters in Public Administration course at the University of Bern.
Fridolin Wicki gained his first practical experience in 1987 as an intern in the former Kern company. After completing his studies, he was an assistant for two years at the Institute for Geodesy and Photogrammetry at ETH Zurich.
From 1992 until he joined swisstopo in 2000, Fridolin Wicki was Deputy Surveyor of the Canton of Aargau. Between 2003 and 2005 he was responsible for managing official cadastral surveying and the Competence Centre for Geospatial Data and National Survey framework 1995. He was head of the Federal Directorate of Cadastral Surveying from 2005 to 2014. From 2006 to 2009, he was project manager for the new legislation on geoinformation. Fridolin Wicki has been Deputy Director of swisstopo since 1 February 2006.
