The flying service acquires all aerial photos for swisstopo (e.g. for recording the topographic landscape model and for the production of SWISSIMAGE). Flying is carried out in conjunction with the Swiss Air Force.
Geodata production
Aerial photo acquisition
Satellite image acquisition
Satellite images from various sensors are being purchased, georeferenced and mosaiked. They provide an independent set of geodata which can also be used for updating other geodata.
Georeferencing
The georeferencing or geolocation of a set of aerial images is being carried out with the technique of aerotriangulation. Some control points link the photos to the map or the terrain.
Photogrammetric restitution of aerial photos
Recording the topographic landscape model is being done with the techniques of 3D and 2.5D image based data capture.
Field data collection and verification
Laserscanning
The survey of high precision terrain and object heights is being done out of air planes by laser distance measurement.
Geodata acquisition
For the completion of the foreign part of the topographic landscape and the maps geodata are being acquired from surrounding national survey organisations.
GIS data set
The data collected with the above mentioned methods are being assembled to a GIS data set. These are the basic geodata describing the form of the earth surface and the land cover in three dimensions. They are being updated regularly and are the basis for the map production.
