Federal Office of Topography swisstopo

Historic Geodata

Since swisstopo was established in 1838 (initially as the Federal Topographical Bureau) it has produced numerous maps, datasets and various other items. These products are kept in a variety of archives and collections, and form a national treasure that is placed at the disposal of the general public for a broad variety of purposes, including in particular the monitoring of changes to the landscape.

At swisstopo, the term “historical geodata” refers to all datasets that have already been replaced by more recent ones and which therefore describe an outdated landscape status. This applies to maps as well as to other swisstopo products.

Importance and special features

Gradient historich to modern map

Historical geodata from swisstopo is available countrywide and in the Swiss reference system. They form an important basis for environmental monitoring.

Map collection

Extract of Dufour Map
swisstopo’s map collection contains all first editions and revised versions of the official Dufour Map, Siegfried Map and National Map, together with their (often hand-drawn) graphic material. The catalogue of the map collection can be viewed online, and all sheets of the National Map are available in digital form.

Image collection

black and white aerial image
The aerial photograph collection contains more than 600 000 images which should be preserved and made accessible to the general public. To achieve this aim, swisstopo will be digitalising all photographs over the next few years. This will help to minimise the repeated physical exposure of the original images, which speeds up the disintegration of analogue photographs due to natural deterioration. Furthermore, digital georeferenced aerial photographic data will enable every user to access information quickly and easily.
