Geological 3D software

High-quality geological 3D modelling is still only possible today using specialised software.

Pure CAD applications or 3D software packages (e.g. Cinema 4D or 3D Studio Max) cannot manage the specific requirements of 3D geology.

The Swiss Geological Survey has therefore decided to implement the “Move” software produced by  Midland Valley Exploration External website. Content opens in new window for geological 3D modelling.

Move software suite

Move is the leading software package for structural geology. This software package allows thorough structural, kinematic, geometric analyses to be carried out, also taking into account the “time” factor.

Move consists of four components:

  • 2DMove: application for 2D digitalisation and construction of maps and profiles, balancing, kinematic restoration and structural analyses
  • 3DMove: application for 3D modelling, validation, geometric restoration and structural analyses
  • 4DMove: application for data integration, scenario-based and workflow-based analyses (4DRestore, 4DSediment, 4DFrac) as well as statistical evaluations
  • MoveViewer: application for in-house 2D and 3D visualisation on a PC without a Move licence installed

Midland Valley Move Steering Committee

swisstopo is a member of Move’s Steering Committee. Together with other clients, the Swiss Geological Survey (representing swisstopo) can directly influence the further strategic and functional development of the software. In this group, the Swiss Geological Survey also represents the interests and requirements of users in Switzerland and other geological services.

Further representatives in the Steering Committee are BP, Shell, ExxonMobil, StatoilHydro, ENI, Repsoil, Sandridge and ONGC.
