The Mont Terri
Rock Laboratory lies north of the town of St-Ursanne and is located at a depth of around 300 meters below the surface. There are two major conditions for the implementation of such a project: the available access to the laboratory by an existing tunnel and the favorable geological characteristics (minimal tectonic deformations in the Opalinus Clay).

The challeges of Mont Terri Project
As part of the international Mont Terri research project, the hydrogeological, geochemical and rock mechanical properties of clay formations such as Opalinus Clay are being investigated . Several conditions favor clay formations as potential host rocks for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste.
The Mont Terri Rock laboratory is intended purely for research purposes. At no time may radioactive waste be emplaced in the facility.
