Zimmerwald represents the modern «fundamental point» for the Swiss coordinate system. There are numerous geodetic instruments in Zimmerwald performing their tasks. With the introduction of the new national surveying LV95, which is basically defined by a reference network of approx. 200 points in Switzerland, the original fundamental point at the old observatoriy in Bern was "transferred" to Zimmerwald.
Today station Zimmerwald can justifiably be called the fundamental point of national surveying. By means of different observation techniques, among others GPS (Global Positioning System) and SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging), the reference networks of the Swiss national survey can be connected to the European or global reference frames with a high accuracy. Since these measurements are based on two entirely different methods, these connections to other reference frames are independently corroborated. Both techniques allow connections to be made with an accuracy in the order of a few millimeters.
