Abstract

Berichte der Landesgeologie - BLG1
This report compiles the results of three milestone experiments conducted in the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory: the Heater Experiment, the Engineered Barriers Emplacement, and the Ventilation Experiment. The primary objective was to study thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes in Opalinus Clay, a potential host rock for high-level radioactive waste disposal. The Heater Experiment investigated interactions between bentonite buffer and host rock during artificial hydration and heating phases, revealing insights into thermal conductivity, pore pressure evolution, and sensor performance under harsh conditions.

The Engineered Barrier test assessed emplacement feasibility and the long-term stability of bentonite blocks. The Ventilation Experiment analyzed the impact of air ingress on claystone desaturation. Extensive in situ monitoring, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling supported the experiments. Together, the results significantly enhance the understanding of clay barrier systems and provide a robust foundation for the design of deep geological repositories.
