Abstract

Berichte der Landesgeologie - BLG3
This report presents a comprehensive summary of more than ten years of research at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory in northwestern Switzerland. The international project, initiated in 1996, focuses on the Opalinus Clay formation as a potential host rock for radioactive waste disposal. It involved 78 experiments conducted by 12 partner organizations from Europe and Japan, covering hydrogeology, geochemistry, microbiology, gas migration, rock mechanics, and thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes.

Key findings highlight the extremely low permeability and self-sealing behavior of Opalinus Clay, the dominance of diffusion over advection, the response to gas and thermal stress, and the reliability of engineered barrier systems. Demonstration experiments confirmed the feasibility of repository concepts. The project has significantly advanced scientific understanding of argillaceous host rocks and established Mont Terri as a benchmark site for deep geological research and repository development.
