Switzerland was subdivided into a multitude of triangles, each having its own transformation parameters matched to local conditions. swisstopo is making the CHENyx06 national triangular transformation network and also the REFRAME library (for software developers) available free of charge.

The development of the CHENyx06 triangular transformation network was completed at the end of 2006 in close cooperation with the cantonal cadastral survey authorities. Switzerland was subdivided into a multitude of triangles, each having its own transformation parameters matched to local conditions (see FINELTRA manual, Chapter 2).

In addition, to verify the accuracy of the transformation, the cantonal authorities measured almost 45’000 control points. The results greatly exceeded expectations: on average, geographic data in Switzerland can now be transformed into the new, practically error-free, LV95 reference frame with an average accuracy range (over all the cantons) of 3 centimetres (± 1.5 centimetres).

swisstopo is making the CHENyx06 national triangular transformation network and also the REFRAME DLL library (for software developers) available free of charge. This can easily be integrated into existing applications, software or macros. Please register before downloading, so that we can keep you informed of ongoing developments in the conversion programme.

Together with the definition and establishment of the new LV95 reference system, the creation of this transformation dataset represents the biggest geodetic control survey project since the “first triangulation”, the original federal survey of Switzerland at the end of the 19th century.

The FINELTRA triangular transformation network will soon deliver significant benefits to the national economy, both by offering considerably more efficient positioning and surveying using GPS and other satellite navigation systems, and by enabling the exchange of precise geographic data with neighbouring countries.
