About the project

Transportation Network CH is a project by swisstopo. The overarching objective is to create opportunities for everyone who works with mobility data to better link this data and thus help to provide a more efficient overall mobility system in Switzerland.

Transportation Network CH provides the geodatabase and tools for spatially referencing mobility data—i.e. finding a common “denominator”—and combining it. This makes it one of the core elements of the future national mobility data infrastructure (MODI).

Focus on user needs

Transportation Network CH is an interface project and can only be a success when everyone pulls in the same direction. This is why the project team took a collaborative approach from the outset. It sought contact with organisations in the transport and mobility sector early on to incorporate the needs of users and producers of mobility geodata, create synergies and generate the greatest possible added value for everyone.

Broadly coordinated

The Federal Offices ARE, FEDRO, FOT and FSO  supervise the work in a technical committee, contributing their requirements and expertise. They want to integrate Transportation Network CH into their tasks and processes in the future. In addition, numerous interested parties from the public sector and from the fields of mobility, transport, geoinformation and research are following and supporting the setup of Transportation Network CH.

Evident support and demand

Exchanges with numerous public and private research organisations and politicians have shown that there is strong interest in using the functions of Transportation Network CH. They also welcome the approach of central coordination with decentralised data sovereignty.

Developed by proven specialists

swisstopo is developing Transportation Network CH together with mandated companies and specialists. They provide the project team with comprehensive expertise in the fields of mobility, geoinformation, IT, communication, project management and law.

Aligned with MODI and other national initiatives

In terms of content and timing, Transportation Network CH is being established in close coordination with the development of the MODI, the associated legislative process for the Federal Act on the Mobility Data Infrastructure (MODIG), the overarching “Programme for the Use of Data for an Efficient Mobility System” and other national initiatives, such as the National Geodata Infrastructure (NGDI), the Traffic Data Platform (VDP) and the “National Data Management” (NaDB) programme.

The future of Transportation Network CH

The responsibilities for the future operation and further development of Transportation Network CH from 2028 onwards will be defined in MODIG and the associated ordinance. From today’s perspective, it is expedient for swisstopo to also assume a leading and coordinating role in the operation of Transportation Network CH after the setup phase. This is because coordination tasks relating to the geodata basis, the production of spatial reference data and products derived from it fall within the remit and competence of swisstopo at the federal level. The consultation on MODIG confirmed this assessment. As part of the MODIG legislative process, it is therefore proposed to assign swisstopo the role of operator of Transportation Network CH.
