Ensuring the Supply of Mineral Raw Materials

In Switzerland, the consumption of mineral raw materials amounts to approximately 55 million tons per year, which is 6.2 tons per capita. These raw materials are widely used, particularly in transport infrastructure and construction.

Hard rocks such as siliceous limestone and flysch sandstone, which are essential for the production of railway ballast and high-strength aggregates for road construction, are abundant in Switzerland. Marl, limestone, gravel, and sand – the key raw materials for cement and concrete production – are also available in sufficient quantities. As a result, most of the demand for mineral raw materials can be met through domestic production.

However, long-term access to these resources presents a challenge. Their extraction can conflict with other interests, such as nature and environmental protection, the quality of life of the local population, or economic interests. Swisstopo systematically records mineral deposits and extraction sites, providing essential baseline data on the composition of Switzerland’s underground resources. This national overview, coordinated at the federal level and developed in collaboration with the cantons and industry, helps estimate future demand and contributes to ensuring a long-term supply.

    Mineral raw materials

Mineral raw materials such as gravel, sand, lime and clay are widely used in the construction industry. They are mined in Switzerland to a large extent. The Swiss Geological Survey compiles reports and geodata on the national supply situation with domestic raw materials for decision-makers and the public.

    Folio 2025 – For a safe Switzerland

Security extends far beyond the military sphere. It encompasses issues such as the prevention of natural hazards, the sustainable management and supply of resources, the protection of property rights, the stability of infrastructure and the provision of information to the public. Geodata plays a key role in all these areas.
