Federal Coordination Body for Geology (KBGeol)

The Federal Coordination Body for Geology (KBGeol) standardises the collection of subsurface data and consolidates cooperation between the authorities, scientists and the private sector.

The importance of underground space is increasing, with more and more players, institutions and representatives from a wide range of disciplines expressing an interest in the subsurface. The realm beneath our feet is invisible. Basic geological data contribute to a better understanding. They provide information about the Earth’s composition and thus assist in energy generation, waste storage and the mining of raw materials.

Within swisstopo, the Swiss Geological Survey created the Federal Coordination Body for Geology (KBGeol) in order to ensure that the exchange of geological data among the various players occurs smoothly and efficiently, and that the geological datasets are made widely accessible. It has the chairmanship runs the secretariat.

KBGeol has the task (in accordance with Art. 15 para. 2 LgeoIV) of coordinating the exchange of geological data among expert groups, cantons, universities, specialist associations and other federal agencies. KBGeol develops standards and strategies for the exchange of data among federal authorities and third parties and is involved in the development of technical standards.
