The standardised geological vector datasets

geocover

Geological vector datasets for better subsurface management

NEW: Portions of the datasets have been updated based on new local geological knowledge and the current topography (version V3).

These geological vector datasets are the ideal basis for creating geothematic datasets that concern, for example, natural hazards, environmental issues or analyses in geographical information systems (GIS).

With version V2, nationwide queries are possible. The new version V3, in addition, offers an updated dataset based on the new topography and the latest local geological knowledge. The revision work for this new version is limited to the Swiss territory.

According to the sheet layout of the 1:25 000 national maps, the 222 datasets are based on the published maps of the Geological Atlas of Switzerland 1:25 000, partly revised, and on compilations extracted from the most recent geological map material that is available.

The data sets are numbered according to the following logic:
- from 1 to 3 digits  for the existing sheets of the Geological Atlas of Switzerland at 1:25 000 scale, e.g. GC-V2-100 for Bern (available in version V2)
- 4 digits (corresponding to those of the national map) for compilations based mainly on special geological maps and unpublished originals at various scales, e.g. GC-V2-1193 for Tödi.

The GeoCover product is only available in MN95. Data are supplied without a topographical basis.

The version V3 will be available progressively as of June 2022.
