Geoinformation for well-informed decisions

For the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, the security of Switzerland and its population have top priority. Thus security is also a daily concern of the Federal Office of Topography: swisstopo supplies precise geographical data that is available to the authorities and the general public. This solid information base is essential for responding to current needs.

Today, security no longer only relates to the geopolitical context. It also encompasses the protection of critical infrastructure, cyber-security, resilience in the face of climate crises and the management and reliability of infor-mation flows in a networked world. These factors are becoming increasingly decisive in guaranteeing national stability and sovereignty. In the light of these diverse and complex risks, the data produced by swisstopo is indispensable: it guarantees access to information, assists in decision- making – also in the event of crises and emergencies – and facilitates coordination between different players. It is essential to have access to high-quality, reliable information that is available at all times, is free of any interests and covers the whole country. Thanks to the data and services provided by swisstopo, Switzerland enjoys a public service that guarantees secure and efficient spatial management.

Over and above these immediate challenges, we must also anticipate future developments. New techno-logies, artificial intelligence and the automation of spatial analysis are opening up new perspectives with the potential to strengthen the resilience of our country and its population. By making proper use of these advances, we can ensure that geoinformation remains a valuable strategic good for Switzerland. Among other things, this is the aim of NEPRO, a key programme that seeks to modernise our production tools.

Thus, by continuing to supply strategic data in the interests of Switzerland and its prosperity, we will remain a major contributor to national security.

In a constantly changing world, reliable geographic data is not a luxury but a necessity. By modernising our production tools, we are giving Switzerland the means to take well-informed decisions today and in the future.
Stefan Marti, Head of the Strategy and Steering Division and member of the Management Committee of swisstopo

    Folio 2025 – For a safe Switzerland

Security extends far beyond the military sphere. It encompasses issues such as the prevention of natural hazards, the sustainable management and supply of resources, the protection of property rights, the stability of infrastructure and the provision of information to the public. Geodata plays a key role in all these areas.
