The aim behind the federal geoportal is to place basic and up-to-date official geodata at the disposal of federal authorities, the general public  and the scientific community in a convenient manner, with a high level of quality and encompassing the entire territory of the Swiss Confederation. The Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) operates the geoportal on behalf of the Coordinating Agency for Federal Geographic Information (GCG).

What services does provide? is an Internet platform for location-based information, data and services of the federal administration on the basis of maps.  

This means you can directly access geographic information and map material from various federal offices, and thus on a wide range of topics, including historical maps and aerial images, borders, field names, noise maps, travel times, dams and reservoirs, areas infested by ticks, real estate information, and much more. Under the header “Time travel” you can also trace the development of Switzerland’s landscapes on the basis of maps and aerial images. 

You can also use the map viewer ( to compile geodata sets with a selected map or aerial image as background, and concerning the region of your choice. With the viewer you can access these maps free of charge and without having to register, and can add tags to them, share them with friends, print them out or use them offline on a mobile device. Information regarding copyright and conditions of use is included with each map.

Who can benefit from

The portal is available to anyone who is interested, as well as to specialists. The latter can access interfaces for calling up geographic information via the Internet by opening the “Geoservices” tab.

Via you can obtain all publicly accessible geodata of the federal administration directly from the respective federal office, together with details regarding the corresponding costs and conditions for use.
