5th European Meeting on 3D Geological Modelling

3D geological modeling professionals have been meeting regularly in order to share their knowledge and experiences. This year's «5th European Meeting on 3D Geological Modeling» is organized by swisstopo and will take place from 21 to 24 May 2019 in the Kursaal Bern. Among the approximately 100 participants are representatives of the national geological centres from more than 23 European countries.

International knowledge exchange for a better 3D detection understanding of the subsurface

Geological 3D models help us to understand the nature of the subsurface and serve as a spatial planning instrument for underground construction activities. 3D geological modeling professionals from all over Europe have been meeting regularly over the past few years in order to share their knowledge and experiences. The fifth edition will take place this year from 21 to 24 May 2019 in Bern with up to 100 participants. The event is organized under the title "The role of 3D geology in spatial planning" by the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo.

Geological 3D modeling has gained in importance in recent years, as the land suitable for building is becoming scarcer and because spatial planning increasingly includes the subsurface3D geological models are an important planning aid in this respect as they provide detailed information about the nature of the underground realm. Geological data are one of the foundations for supply security, civil protection, protection against natural hazards, georesource management or the development of infrastructure. A regular exchange of knowledge between professionals helps to make progress, to develop solutions and to inform the community about the latest software offers.

Demonstrating the societal benefits of 3D geological models

This year's "5th European Meeting on 3D Geological Modeling" meeting is organized by the Swiss Geological Survey and will take place in the Kursaal Bern. Among the approximately 100 participants are representatives of the national geological centres from more than 23 European countries. The main topics in relation to spatial planning are the role, benefits and application of geological 3D models; access to data; political and social impacts. Experts show what role they play as responsible knowledge mediators between the virtual and the real world.
The requirements increase with increasing complexity and technical progress. Building Information Modeling BIM will become one of the main drivers of innovation in the near future, including applied geology. Issues such as machine learning, neural networks as well as big data are already among the challenges faced by the geosciences; the broad spectrum of possible practical applications has not yet been exhausted.
