Global reference frames
The connection of Switzerland with the global reference frames is possible through different systems.
ITRFyyyy: IERS Terrestrial Reference Frame yyyy
(in the IERS Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS))
Three-dimensional reference frame based on the definition of the International Earth Rotation Service.
ETRFyyyy: European Terrestrial Reference Frame yyyy
(in the European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 (ETRS89))
Three-dimensional reference frame based on the European GNSS reference network EUREF, which covers the entire European continent and is also anchored in Switzerland, primarily via Ziimmerwald geostation.
CHTRFyyyy: Swiss Terrestrial Reference Frame yyyy
(in the Swiss Terrestrial Reference System 1995 (CHTRS95))
Three-dimensional reference frame based on the comprehensive GNSS national network with approximately 200 main and densification points, and the permanent GNSS network, AGNES (approximately 40 automatic stations). The highly accurate reference frame fulfils all the demands with respect to the absolute accuracy and reliability of the coordinates in the centimetre range. The exact transformation between ETRFyyyy and CHTRFyyyy, is guaranteed.
CHTRFyyyy is the realisation of the CHTRS95 system at various times. New sets of coordinates (e.g. CHTRF95, 98, 2004, 2010 and 20016) are determined through periodic remeasurements and adjustments of the geodetic networks and made available for special applications (major engineering surveys). The results of CHTRF216 are published here.
