sCHoolmaps.ch
Swiss map viewer application: sCHoolmaps.ch makes lessons exciting – and most importantly educational.
If the Swiss Government’s map viewer application, which is available at map.geo.admin.ch, changes its name to sCHoolmaps, teachers should prick up their ears. The digital school map is the perfect basis for creating countless lesson ideas across many different subjects – be it geography, history, biology, mathematics or ICT, anything is possible. Pupils from year 4 and up can benefit from this wide-ranging teaching resource.
Find places, calculate areas
The game-like approach taken by sCHoolmaps.ch helps make lessons exciting. Pupils can use the digital map to search for particular place names or find nearby leisure activities. This helps them to acquire important skills for using topographical maps. But sCHoolmaps.ch offers so much more than this: if a maths lesson involves calculating areas, for example, the map viewer can help to visualise this as it indicates the size of an area.
Making history visible
sCHoolmaps.ch can even help to shed better light on aspects of history. Using the built-in time travel function, based on old and recent aerial photographs, pupils gain an understanding of glacial retreat or the restoration of rivers and other bodies of water. It is even possible to visualise the development of urban areas.
Group work and projects
By using these digital teaching resources, you will receive a lot of input as a teacher because they are also ideally suited to group work or projects. Pupils will make practical use of the map of Switzerland, for example by calculating differences in elevation or distances, thereby building their independence.
map.geo.admin.ch is free to access and no registration is required. Let the classroom adventures begin!
