Military cartography
The military cartography plays a key role in procuring, preparing and distributing geodata and special maps for the armed forces. It produces special geodata and maps for troops and the administrative units.

Acquisition and processing of geodata
The military cartography acquires and processes geodata from Switzerland and abroad for the various systems and applications used by the armed forces. For this purpose, it can also work with the foreign partners through the Institute for Military Geography. Some of this data is available at map.geo.admin.ch under the topic “Defence”.
Special maps for the armed forces
The military cartography produces special maps that meet the armed forces unique requirements. These maps of military training areas, shooting grounds and exercise grounds are generally based on the Swiss national maps and aerial photographs. They also feature customised military data such as information on barracks and federal petrol stations. The maps are made available to the armed forces in appropriate digital and/or printed formats.
