Military spatial data infrastructure
The military spatial data infrastructure provides the armed forces’ command, control, communications and computer (C4) systems with the required geoservices. As part of this, swisstopo ensures a geodata interface between the federal spatial data infrastructure and its military twin.

The armed forces’ geodata infrastructure
Geodata infrastructures are used to effectively link geographic information and make it available. Access to reliable, up-to-date geoinformation is essential for situational awareness. At the federal level, the creation of the Federal Spatial Data Infrastructure (FSDI) and the map.geo.admin.ch portal has been an important step in optimising geodata management. However, to meet the armed forces’ requirements in terms of content, features, security and availability, a geodata infrastructure known as the military spatial data infrastructure (MSDI) was created for use on protected networks and platforms.
The MSDI provides a huge amount of civil and military information via geoservices. These geoservices can be easily integrated into systems and applications. The aim is for control, communications and computer (C4) systems involved in this to be operated using a uniform cartographic basis. In cooperation with the armed forces and the Armed Forces Command Support Organisation (AFCSO), swisstopo operates a geodata interface between the federal spatial data infrastructure and its military twin.
