Commemorating the publication of sheets 170/171 Brienz/Beatenberg of the Geological Atlas of Switzerland 1:25,000 in 2022, swisstopo is organising a geological excursion on the northern shore of Lake Thun.

Between Beatenbucht and Neuhaus b. Unterseen, we will observe rock formations along the hiking trail that are geologically interesting testimonies of the ancient Tethys Sea. These rocks will take us back in time over 100-40 million years. We will also discover their relationship to the formation of the Alps. In the course of the excursion, we will visit the imposing Balmholz Quarry and take a look at the entrance to the Beatus Caves.
