Geological excursion Passo San Jorio

Two days at the Passo San Jorio: «One foot in Europe, the other foot in Africa» and the Via del Ferro

Panorama Passo San Jorio

From Saturday, 02 September 2023, 10:00am
To Sunday, 03 September 2023, 5:00pm

Viale Stazione 36 6500 Bellinzona

The Passo San Jorio is one of Europe’s most geologically fascinating areas. On the way there, we will see a succession of rocks that leads us from the European to the Adriatic (African) tectonic plate. At the Passo, we will stand on the «Insubric Line» and enjoy the spectacular views.

On the second day, we will take a leisurely walk on the sunny side before we come to the Via del Ferro, where iron-rich rocks have been transported since pre-Christian times. On the way down with an Alpine taxi, we take a detour to the reconstructed «Al Maglio» furnace. A tour of superlatives for all!
