The objective of the one-day annual conference is to promote the exchange of geological information between the cantons, various federal authorities and industry associations. Each conference deals with a broad variety of topics, ranging from legal provisions relating to geological activities through to hydrogeology, geothermal activities, natural resources and spatial planning.

It was established in 1988 by the former Federal Office of Hydrology and Geology. In the early years it was attended by representatives from nine cantons (Aargau, Basel-Stadt, Fribourg, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Solothurn, Ticino, Vaud and Valais) plus delegates from the federal government. Since 2002, however, representatives from the majority of cantons as well as other federal offices (Federal Office for Spatial Development, Federal Roads Office, Federal Office for the Environment, Swiss Federal Office of Energy, State Secretariat for Economic Affairs) have attended the conference. The Swiss Geological Survey operates the secretariat of the Conference of Cantonal Geologists.

It advises on regulations governing mining and submits corresponding proposals. It plays a leading role in the formulation and content of mining legislation. Regulating the use of the underground is the responsibility of the cantons, but in order to avoid 26 different sets of regulations, the Swiss Geological Survey sets out to coordinate and standardise the content. It also assists with permits and licences as well as with activities relating to data exchange.
