Survey

The Divison of «Geodesy and Federal Directorate of Cadastral Surveying» (or «Surveying Division» for short) is the federal authority responsible for the combined tasks of official cadastral surveying and the Cadastre of public-law restrictions on landownership (PLR Cadastre) as well as for the national geodetic survey.

Reference systems, definitions of reference areas and map projection systems, as well as their implementation in the form of reference frames with reference points, geoid models, permanent global navigation satellite system (GNSS) networks and positioning services, are all processed and managed within the scope of the national geodetic survey. Thanks to these basic geodetic criteria and reference data for the national geodata infrastructure, it is possible to depict geodata and their national and international exchangeability accurately and in a homogeneous manner.

The Surveying Division is responsible for the strategic management and supervision of the official cadastral survey and the Cadastre of public-law restrictions on landownership (PLR Cadastre). For this purpose it works closely together with the relevant cantonal authorities, who are responsible for the associated operational activities.

Duties

The duties of the Surveying Division include the following activities:

  • Implementation of the strategies relating to the official cadastral survey and the PLR Cadastre as defined by the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).
  • Planning, management and supervision of the cadastral survey and the PLR Cadastre in close cooperation with the cantons.
  • Constant development of the official survey and the PLR Cadastre in line with new technologies and organisational structures.
  • Technical supervision of the cadastral survey at the request of the cantons (this currently concerns the cantons of Appenzell-Innerrhoden, Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, Glarus, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Uri and the Principality of Liechtenstein).
  • Agency of the Federal Commission for Surveyors, including organisation of the state examination and management of the Register of Surveyors.
  • Definition of geodetic reference systems, and development, updating, management and provision of geodetic reference frames (location, height and gravity) for Switzerland.
  • Development, operation and maintenance of a fundamental station and permanent stations of Switzerland’s automated global navigation satellite systems, plus their constant supervision and evaluation of the received data.
  • Operation of modern positioning services with varying degrees of accuracy and encompassing the entire country.
