Focus areas

Geomaticians specialised in geoinformatics are specialists in the acquisition, modelling, updating, analysis and visualisation of spatial information. Data such as the position or the altitude of an object are acquired with the latest measurement systems and evaluated, managed and analysed using geoinformation systems and special applications. These data serve as a basis for many information and planning tasks as well as for decisions in the fields of technology, commerce, the environment and politics.

For many geomaticians it is the unique combination of visualisation and use of technology that makes their profession so appealing.

Geomaticians specialised in cartography are specialists in the visual implementation of geoinformation. Using various geoinformation systems and special applications for the preparation, processing and layout of data, geomaticians specialised in cartography create appropriate map graphics for the correct and understandable representation and communication of complex issues.

swisstopo and the Swiss Federal Statistical Office in Neuchâtel are, at present, the only training institutions for geomaticians specialising in cartography. swisstopo has always set the benchmark for the creation of high-quality map products.

We offer interesting and demanding vocational training in an organisational unit with about 20 apprentices, a four-person team of vocational trainers and around 16 practical trainers.

Dominic Teuscher and Pascal Maurer completed their apprenticeship as geomaticians specialising in cartography in summer 2015, and both of them are now involved in the production of the new national map of Switzerland.

Geomaticians specialised in cadastral surveying are specialists in the acquisition, updating, representation, management and marketing of spatial information. In particular, this concerns the surveying of property boundaries and other objects such as buildings, streets, walls, etc. This geoinformation serves as a basis for management of the Swiss Federal Land Register and is represented to scale in the plan for the land register and marked on the terrain. The acquisition of changes in the real world, mostly due to construction activities, is the main task of cadastral surveying.

The cadastral surveying specialisation is not taught at swisstopo as no tasks of this type are carried out.

The cadastral surveying specialisation is not taught at swisstopo. Apprentices specialising in geoinformatics also complete internships at the Land Surveying Office of the City of Bern and in the Geodesics Department.
