Switzerland in 3D

Fly over the Alps, discover your neighbourhood or check out the steep passages for your next hike. Thanks to the 3D mode in the Swiss federal map viewer, you can explore a free, online, three-dimensional, digital model of Switzerland. It contains every building and numerous other objects too.

70 million 3D objects and interactive navigation

Switzerland is one of the first countries to possess a detailed 3D buildings model covering the whole country. This digital model of Switzerland consists of approx. 70 million 3D objects. Besides every single building in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein, bridges, cable cars, forests, individual trees and geographical names are also represented in 3D. All these objects rest on a terrain model that describes the topography (mountains, valleys, plains) and gives the effect of depth and relief in the 3D environment.

This is how it works...

  • In the 3D map viewer, search for the desired location by typing in a place name in the search box or by zooming or panning.
  • Move around the 3D model by using mouse, touchpad, touchscreen or icons provided on the bottom edge of the screen.

You will find detailed instructions here.

Share and integrate views

3D views from the Swiss map viewer can also be integrated into your own website or web portal, either directly via the map.geo.admin.ch iFrame function or by acquiring the data in the form of 3D tiles from the relevant swisstopo geoservice and integrating them into a web portal. An interface also allows your own 2 and 3-dimensional data to be imported in KML and GPX formats. You can copy a selected view from the 3D viewer as a link (URL) and share it with others.

Every building in Switzerland in 3D

Buildings and residential areas shape the Swiss landscape. These objects are thus very important when it comes to spatial representation. swisstopo has digitalised every building in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein and used them to create 3D building models with realistic roof shapes and overhangs. The last areas were finished in summer 2018. A dataset with 3D building models for all regions of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein is thus available.
